[UN]REDACTED
My project examines the ethics of surveillance, the struggle for visibility, and the tension between control and transparency in contemporary society. Rooted in the logic of the panopticon, the work forces participants into a space where the boundaries between observer and observed collapse. Through a combination of live surveillance feeds, pre-recorded footage, and a sculptural installation, [un]redacted exposes the ways surveillance has become embedded in daily life not just as a tool of security but as an invisible force shaping behaviour, perception, and power.
The work draws on the concept of black transparency, the strategic exposure of hidden systems to reveal the mechanisms of surveillance that often go unnoticed. While institutions obscure their gaze under the guise of safety and neutrality, [un]redacted flips this dynamic, making surveillance hyper-visible and undeniable. Clear signage warns of monitoring, yet participation is the only way to experience the work, confronting viewers with the unsettling reality that consent and awareness are rarely prerequisites for being watched.
By engaging with the aesthetics of authority; wires, screens, and a looming structural presence the work critiques the normalisation of surveillance in both public and private spaces. Whether through security cameras, smartphones, or biometric tracking, we exist within a network of constant observation where the act of looking is an assertion of power. [un]redacted asks: What does it mean to be seen? Who controls visibility? And in a world where surveillance is as ordinary as breathing, how do we reclaim agency over our own image?
