WHAT HAPPENS WHEN NOTHING HAPPENS

This project aims to explore the everyday aesthetics of High street. Indexing through collection; these set of images, 3D scans and videos are set to capture the areas of what is considered to be a historically rich street.

My journey as a graphic designer is an exploration of the interplay between the ordinary and the extraordinary, where I draw inspiration from the works of Stephen Johnstone and Lev Manovich to shape my creative direction.

Guided by Johnstone's fascination with the mundane and influenced by Manovich's notion of the database as a new symbolic form, I delve into the intricate layers of architecture, typography and focusing on the contemporary landscape of the high street. the This bustling thoroughfare, once heartbeat of communities, now stands as a symbol of temporal transitions and socio-economic shifts.

I seek to weave a narrative that captures the deterioration of the high street's evolution. The metamorphosis of these physical spaces over time, with memories and muted nostalgia, becomes a rich source of visual storytelling.

I want to offer a perspective that fosters a deeper appreciation for the interplay between information, aesthetics, and the everyday experience.

IF THE EVERYDAY IS THE REALM OF THE UNNOTICED AND THE OVERLOOKED, HOWEVER, IT MIGHT BE ASKED JUST HOW WE CAN ATTEND TO IT? HOW DO WE DRAG THE EVERYDAY INTO VIEW - STEHPEN JOHNSON

Drawn to the cityscape of Auckland and the stories it holds, I find myself delving into the intricate concepts encompassing the database, the everyday, and archival elements. In my quest to unravel and elucidate these notions, I employed a multifaceted approach that harnesses the visual mediums of video, imagery, and scans to craft a moving image projection work. This creative venture draws intellectual inspiration from writers such as Lev Manovich, Michael Rock, Stephen Johnstone, and Charles Merewether. Furthermore, my artistic style has been influenced by renowned creators like Susan Hiller, Camille Henrot, and Edward Ruscha. By weaving together these concepts, artists and thinkers I aimed to facilitate a deeper engagement with the very essence of my work.

Having spent my entire life on the outskirts of Auckland, the city itself often appeared distant and awe-inspiring. It featured towering skyscrapers, concealed alleyways, and a bustling urban core. The larger-than-life ambiance that, during my childhood felt almost enchanting. As time passed, however, that initial allure began to fade and lose its novelty.
