A deeply personal exploration of grief, memory, and the search for connection across distance. Created for I ‘AM NOT HERE, BUT I AM HERE. YOU ARE HERE, BUT YOU ARE NOT HERE’, this collection of photographs captures moments from Vietnam in response to the loss of the artist’s father, tracing the complex emotions of homesickness, duty, and remembrance.
Through quiet streets, familiar landscapes, and everyday rituals, the images reflect the weight of mourning while navigating Vietnam’s traditions of honouring the dead. As the eldest son, the artist carries the responsibility of leading funeral rites, yet within this duty lies the ache of absence—the presence of a person felt in everything left behind.
More than a document of loss, I AM NOT HERE, BUT I AM HERE. YOU ARE HERE, BUT YOU ARE NOT HERE. is a meditation on moving forward while holding onto the past. It speaks to the unspoken ways grief lingers, how home can be both near and impossibly far, and how love endures through memory, tradition, and the spaces in between
