WHAT HAPPENS WHEN NOTHING HAPPENS

The locations that epitomised this transformation was High Street, a diminutive lane branching off Queen Street. In its early days, High Street boasted an array of one-of-a-kind shops, each exuding a natural uniqueness and quirkiness that set it apart from other streets. Yet, as the years went by, High Street's status changed. It evolved from a cherished and highly regarded locale into a mere shortcut I used to reach my classes, ultimately slipping into the background and becoming overlooked.

The idea of a High Street historically originates from Medieval England, and one of the main features of these towns was a central road that connected various parts of the settlement. This road was often elevated, both for practical reasons such as drainage and to protect against flooding. This elevated road came to be known as the high street.

While it is true that high streets have faced significant challenges and transformations over the years, it would be an oversimplification to say that they have lost all their value. The viewpoint of value may vary depending on the individual perspectives and the specific context of each high street. However, it is important to recognise that high streets are not solely defined by their economic function. They hold cultural and social significance as well. High streets continue to be places where communities gather, events are held, and local traditions are celebrated. They provide spaces for social interactions, support local initiatives, and act as platforms for community engagement. In this regard, high streets still hold value as important social and cultural hubs.

Over the years of residing in Auckland, in 2020 I found myself working on one the city's iconic streets. This first-hand involvement provided me with a unique perspective on the street's transformation, extending beyond its role as a mere retail corridor. I witnessed the gradual physical decline of this once-thriving area in real-time, observing as businesses closed their doors, foot traffic dwindled, and performance metrics and targets remained unmet.
